Playing into Letterman’s Hands

To my shock and surprise the David Letterman / Sarah Palin controversy shows no sign of slowing down. Letterman, who is taking a lot of heat for a sexist joke he made about Palin’s daughter Bristol who recently had a child out of wedlock.

Although Letterman has made a few weak attempts at an apology, Palin supporters and even some moderate Republicans are not satisfied. There is even a report issued by Politico which says that The Olive Garden has canceled its Ads on the Letterman show for the rest of the year. So it seems like there may be a victory in sight on this one right? Not really.

What people don’t be considering is that David Letterman is a comedian (term used loosely) he is not an elected official. This controversy isn’t hurting Letterman at all, but it may be damaging Palin. Letterman is now getting the best ratings he’s had in years. Not because he’s suddenly more entertaining but because of all the free advertisement he is getting from GOPers who are perpetuating this controversy.

When you get involved in a gutter fight, win or lose, you’re still in the gutter. Letterman is a gutter comedian and he is loving every minute of this. The longer the story stays in the news cycle the lower and less sophisticated Palin seems. She is better than this, I don’t know why she doesn’t seem to know that.

And here’s another problem; what is the real objection. Is the problem that David Letterman said something sexist and demoralizing to women or is it that he said something bad about Sarah Palin.

If this is a women’s issue, then where are the calls for the removal of Rush Limbaugh from the air for having called Chelsea Clinton a dog? That’s pretty bad, fairly disrespectful, particularly when Chelsea was 13 years old at the time.

It’s time for GOPers to start asking a very important question before we get involved in these types of conflicts; what does victory bring. If we win this dispute with David Letterman, what is it we win? What do we get for the struggle?

With so many problems facing the nation is our primary concern the fact that David Letterman is a bad comedian? Is this what we’re about right now?
