CSO presents movie mystery music plus Keaton's 'Sherlock, Jr.'

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s popular Friday Night at the Movies series continues this season on Friday, February 5, at 8 p.m., when guest conductor Richard Kaufman leads the CSO in musical selections from unforgettable movie mysteries, as well as the comedic caper Sherlock, Jr., starring and directed by Buster Keaton.

The movie-within-a-movie story of Sherlock, Jr. involves Keaton—widely regarded as one of the most innovative and important figures in the history of cinema—as a falsely accused projectionist-turned-amateur-sleuth in a quest to clear his name, catch the villain and win the girl. Featuring Keaton’s trademark clever sight gags, technical trickery and deadpan comedy, Sherlock, Jr. (1924) is one of his most famous and influential comedies. It was selected by the Library of Congress for the National Film Registry in 1991 and ranks in the American Film Institute’s 100 funniest films of all time.

As the movie plays on the big screen over the stage, the Orchestra performs a delightful new score by Timothy Brock, an expert in historic film scores who has restored original orchestral scores and composed new music for nearly 30 silent movies (in 2009 he conducted members of the CSO in his restoration of Charlie Chaplin’s score to Modern Times).

The first half of this Friday Night at the Movies concert takes the audience on a musical tour of the most loved and recognizable themes from classic mysteries, complete with memorable scenes from Sleuth, The Pink Panther, Murder on the Orient Express, Young Sherlock Holmes and more.

Well-regarded film-music conductor Richard Kaufman returns to Chicago after having previously conducted several concerts on the Friday Night at the Movies series. Kaufman is the principal pops conductor with the Pacific Symphony, the Dallas Symphony and the Florida Orchestra; as a member of the music department of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios since 1984, he oversees the music for all MGM television projects. He has conducted recordings of classic film music with the Brandenburg Philharmonic in Berlin, and he made a recording with the Nuremberg Symphony celebrating the 100th anniversary of motion pictures. In 1996, Kaufman recorded two critically acclaimed CDs with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, conducting the film music of Alfred Newman and Victor Young. He has also coached actors including Jack Nicholson, Armand Assante, Dudley Moore, Tom Hanks and Susan Sarandon for musical film roles.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra concludes its 2009-2010 Friday Night at the Movies series on May 28, when it accompanies one of the most enduring and treasured films of all time, The Wizard of Oz, featuring new transcriptions of lost scores conducted by Richard Kaufman.
