Nuveen Investments Emerging Artist Kirill Gerstein performs with CSO Provided by Chicago Symphony Orchestra |
| |
Pianist Kirill Gerstein makes his Chicago Symphony Orchestra subscription debut in performances of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, with conductor Charles Dutoit, on Thursday, March 4, at 8 p.m., Friday, March 5, at 1:30 p.m., and Saturday, March 6, at 8 p.m. Gerstein’s appearance is endowed in part by the Nuveen Investments Emerging Artist Fund. The program also includes Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11 (The Year 1905).
Born in Russia in 1979, Gerstein taught himself to play jazz piano at a young age and came to the United States at age 14 to study at Boston’s Berklee College of Music (the youngest student ever to attend the school). After subsequently changing his focus to classical performance, he attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Solomon Mikowsky and earned Bachelor and Master of Music degrees. He continued his studies with Dmitri Bashkirov in Madrid and Ferenc Rados in Budapest.
In January 2010, Gerstein was named the recipient of the 2010 Gilmore Artist Award, only the sixth musician to have been so honored. The Gilmore Artist Award, a quadrennial prize given to an exceptional pianist, regardless of age or nationality (selected through an anonymous, noncompetitive process), who not only possesses broad and profound musicianship and charisma, but also desires and can sustain a career as a major international concert artist. In 2002, he won the Gilmore Young Artist Award.
In addition, he was awarded first prize at the 2001 Arthur Rubinstein Piano Competition in Tel Aviv and was chosen as Carnegie Hall’s “Rising Star” for the 2005-2006 season. He became an American citizen in 2003 and is currently a professor of piano at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart.
Kirill Gerstein is the 2009-2010 Nuveen Investments Emerging Artist. The Nuveen Investments Emerging Artist Fund was established in 1986, with a gift to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Endowment Fund, to support the appearance of one emerging artist with the CSO each season. Previous Nuveen Investments Emerging Artists include Evgeny Kissin, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Rachel Barton Pine, Han-Na Chang, Lisa Batiashvili, Rachel Lee, Simon Trpceski and Jonathan Biss.
