Decorating Your Kid’s Rooms for Less, Part 1: Big Changes

There’s no better way to give your children a sense of self by decorating their room based on their interests. From favorite color to favorite entertainment character, these are ways to help your child express her self through the things she likes.

This wouldn’t be an easy feat if supplies and accessories for decorating weren’t reasonably priced. Here are some suggestions for simple ways to change your child’s room without spending a lot of money. You’ll completely change the look of a bedroom with one or two changes for very little money.

Big Changes
The following suggestions are considered big changes because they either involve more work or their cost is higher than the small changes listed a farther down.

You could make one big change in your child’s room that will have the most dramatic effect and no other change will be needed.

Rearrange Furniture
This is one of the first things you can do, or include it in the process that will completely change your child’s room and won’t cost you any money. Move the bed to a different wall or angle it out from a corner. Place the entire side of a bed against a wall and give it the look of a daybed (without having to by one).

Paint Color
Whether you paint or wall paper, this change will be one of the biggest to your child’s room. Most often, the color will be your child’s favorite and it can be as dark or light, or bold or soft, as the two of you choose.

Before you buy your paint, have an idea of the color you want but buy the fabric items you plan to change in your child’s room then match your final paint color to the colors in the items you’ve bought. This will help reduce any subtle clashes of color that you could run into.

Bed in a Bag
Buying new bed linens for your child will change the look of the room without the need to do anything else that will cost money. Combine new linens with rearranging furniture and you’ve made two big changes for the price of one.

A bed in a bag is a great way to change all of the linens on your child’s bed for a reasonable price. Spending $50 - $100 will give you a nice set that should be complete with sheets, comforter and usually a bed skirt. There may even be pillow shams so you’ll have at least one decorative pillow on the bed. Many bed in a bag sets have additional accessories you can buy like throw pillows, throw blankets, and other room accessories such as curtains, lamp shades, and wall hangings. If your child wants a decorating them in her room, buying from these sets will accomplish that all in one store.

Window Treatments
Putting new hardware, curtains and shades on your windows are big items because adding up all of the required items (based on the number of windows in the room) gets expensive.

A simple way to change the look of a window is to add a new sheer curtain. Sheers are typically less expensive than curtains and blinds because they’re made from light fabric that isn’t designed to keep out the light. If the windows have curtain panels, place the sheers under the panels. If the windows have blinds, place the sheers over them.

Part 2 of our article will look at making Small Changes to a room.
