Although Shelley Darlingson (Anna Farris) may not be that smart, she learns the valuable lesson of just being yourself. Anna Farris stars as the playboy bunny turned house mother in this funny and lighthearted “Legally Blonde” meets “The Girls Next Door” film.
Shelley lived the perfect rags to riches story. She was abandoned on the doorstep of an orphanage as a baby only to grow up to live in the Playboy mansion. Her life was a whirlwind of shopping, fabulous parties, and lounging in the grotto with Hef. Then on her 27th birthday, she gets evicted from the mansion because she is “59 in bunny years.”
Just as her life seems to be spiraling down the rabbit hole, she uses her bubbly personality and sunny disposition to become the house mother of the unpopular Zeta Alpha Zeta sorority. The sorority has only seven misfit members and they will lose their house and charter if they don’t get 30 pledges before rush is over. Shelley, who just happens to have majored in popularity, teaches the girls how to flirt, dress, and wear makeup. Almost overnight, the Zetas shed their loser image and transform into the biggest thing on campus.
During their philanthropy, a word which Shelley endearingly misuses throughout the film, she meets Oliver (Colin Hanks) while volunteering at a nursing home. She tries all of her old tricks to try to win him over, but realizes that some men like smart women. Shelley starts going to class, improving her vocabulary, and studying feverishly in the library. In her attempts to change the Zetas to be more like her, she has to become more like them to help keep the house and get Oliver.
This witty and lighthearted comedy turns out to have as much heart and soul as Shelley herself. You will walk out of this movie walking a little taller, feeling a little happier, and wishing that you too could be a Zeta. I would give The House Bunny two big ears up.
