Oak Ridge Boys' William Lee Golden Recalls Jacksons "Elvira" Serenade
Oak Ridge Boys member William Lee Golden is among the many offering condolences and sharing memories about pop icon Michael Jackson. In a statement, Golden recalls meeting Michael and his brothers backstage at a Jacksons concert at the Nashville Arena in 1981. Golden says The Jackson "were on top of their game that night," adding, quote, "Michael had an exceptional talent that shone the brightest." Backstage, he says the group surprised him and his sons by singing the Oak Ridge Boys' current hit at the time, "Elvira," and that he and his family returned the favor by singing "Happy Birthday" to Michael who had just turned 23 years old. They also presented him with a birthday cake. Golden says, quote, "It was an evening we will never forget. I was amazed to watch him over the years as he accomplished even higher achievements and became one of the world's greatest entertainers. My thoughts and prayers are with his family." Michael Jackson died Thursday at the age of 50.
