Beyonce Takes Home Big Honors At 2009 BET Awards
Sultry songstress Beyonce was a big winner Sunday night taking home multiple trophies at the star-studded 2009 BET Awards. The pop diva won the top honors of Best Female R&B Artist and Video of the Year for her hit song "Single Ladies." Ne-Yo won for Best Male R&B Artist while newcomers Day 26 took home the award for Best Group. The Best Actress honor went to Taraji P. Henson while Cleveland Cavaliers basketball star LeBron James won Athlete of the Year. A string of chart-topping artists took the stage to belt out songs including newcomer Keri Hilson, Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne. Beyonce sang a moving rendition of "Ave Maria" with a chorus from Sarah McLachlan's "In The Arms of an Angel." Soul singer Keith Sweat made a surprise performance along with rap mogul Jay-Z.
Funnyman Jamie Foxx hosted the Tinseltown celebration that was specially dedicated to pop icon Michael Jackson who passed away last week. The show opened with R&B group New Edition belting out the Jackson Five classic "ABC" as a tribute to the family. Throughout the night, artists talked about what Jackson meant to them while Michael's sister Janet Jackson took the stage to give a brief statement on behalf of the Jackson family to close out the ceremony.
Artists Alicia Keys and Wyclef Jean were awarded the 2009 BET Humanitarian Award for their charitable contributions. They each thanked Jackson for his inspiration to change and heal the world with his own humanitarian efforts. Soul group the O'Jays was honored with the 2009 BET Lifetime Achievement Award. They too took the time to share their experiences working with Jackson and honored the pop star's father Joe Jackson who watched the ceremony from the front row. BET aired the 2009 BET Awards live from the Shrine Auditorium. |
