Annie Lennox Talks About "HIV Positive" Shirt On CNN
Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox has been making a splash lately with a t-shirt she's been wearing that reads, "HIV Positive." Lennox tells CNN's Christiane Amanpour the shirt is about showing solidarity.
Lennox says she is not personally HIV positive, which she knows because she checks her "status." She says it's important for everyone to do the same. Wearing a t-shirt that reads "HIV Positive" is really about breaking a stigma. The singer says, quote, "Because HIV is generally a sexually-transmitted disease, or the other ways we know -- through sharing needles with drug users, etcetera -- people are very much afraid to acknowledge their status if they know they're HIV positive." Lennox is heading up the "Sing Campaign" to raise funds to help people get access to treatment, educate South Africans about HIV, and to prevent further transmission of the disease.
