Florida Governor Charlie Crist Honors Jimmy Buffett
The state of Florida is honoring one of its resident music stars this week. Sunshine State Governor Charlie Crist named Jimmy Buffett of Palm Beach a "Point of Light" on Wednesday. Crist cited the "Margaritaville" icon's recent work to rebuild morale on the Gulf Coast and to attract tourists to the area. Buffett also was recognized for his work "protecting and promoting" Florida's wildlife and its environment. Crist said in a statement, quote, "Jimmy has displayed unwavering devotion and support to Florida and her natural resources for many years, and he has once again risen to the occasion in the wake of this tragic oil spill."
Buffett hosted a free, on-the-beach concert on July 11th to draw attention to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. An estimated 37-thousand fans attended the event, which was televised on CMT. Buffett also has committed to helping with the costs of boats for the ongoing clean-up effort. |
